ARTIST STATEMENT

I have been exploring the contradictory nature of polyurethane foam. At once it is a noxious man-made substance, but when manipulated, it has qualities that mimic nature—growing, then mutating, and finally solidifying into an organic shape. I am interested in creating a kind of ooze that grows on walls, that intrudes and overpowers anything that comes in its path. The foam becomes a strange fungus or parasite expanding, multiplying, then taking over or invading, spilling out and creating its own pre-ordained existence. I am interested in making my own type of nature that is creepy yet beautiful. I want to evoke nature growing out of control, suggesting the larger picture of our world in an ecological imbalance.
